Etymology

Gender + fluid (Latin fluidus, flowing). In community use since at least the 1990s.

History

Appeared in genderqueer communities from the 1990s; gained wider use through LiveJournal gender communities in the 2000s and Tumblr in the early 2010s. JJ Poole formalized it with the 2012 flag.

Common myths

  • "Genderfluid people are just confused." Genderfluid describes a genuine, consistent pattern of gender experience. The consistency is the fluidity.

Notable people

  • Ruby Rose (1986-) - Actor and model; has described not identifying fully as man or woman, "somewhere in the middle"
  • iO Tillett Wright (1985-) - Artist, activist, and writer; Darling Days; longtime advocate for genderfluid experience
