Xenogender

An umbrella term for gender identities that cannot be adequately described using existing human gender language and are instead described through other frameworks - nature, abstract concepts, sensory experiences, neurodivergent experience, or non-human frameworks. Examples: a gender "like starlight," "like deep water," or tied to a specific neurodivergent experience of perception.

Greek xeno- (foreign, strange, other) + gender.

Emerged from Tumblr non-binary communities in the 2010s, with particularly strong roots in autistic and neurodivergent LGBTQ+ spaces. Research suggests autistic people are significantly overrepresented among non-binary and gender-expansive communities. Xenogender vocabulary developed partly to describe gender experiences that emerge from, or are shaped by, neurodivergent ways of perceiving the world.
