Transmasculine & Transfeminine

Umbrella terms for trans people who move toward masculinity (transmasculine) or femininity (transfeminine), including binary and non-binary people whose identity or expression leans that way.

Definition

Umbrella terms for trans people who move toward masculinity (transmasculine) or femininity (transfeminine). They include binary trans men and trans women, and also non-binary people whose gender or expression leans masculine or feminine - useful when a person wants to name a direction of identity without claiming the full binary label.

Etymology

trans- (across) + masculine/feminine. Came into community use in the 2000s-2010s as non-binary vocabulary expanded the language of transition beyond the binary man/woman model.
