Etymology

Greek poly- (many) + sexual.

History

The term circulated in various contexts through the 20th century. Its use as a specific orientation describing attraction to many but not all genders became more defined in the 2000s-2010s as gender identity vocabulary expanded. Tumblr user Samlin's 2012 flag gave it a distinct visual symbol.
