Pangender

A gender identity in which a person identifies with all genders, or with so many genders that their experience is effectively without limit or boundary.

Definition

A gender identity in which a person identifies with all genders, or with so many genders that their experience is effectively without limit or boundary. Distinct from genderfluid (shifting between genders) in that pangender involves encompassing all simultaneously.

Flag

Greek pan- (all) + gender.

History

Circulated in non-binary communities since at least the 1990s; gained wider usage in the 2010s alongside other non-binary vocabulary.

Common myths

  • "Pangender is impossible - you can't be all genders at once." Pangender is a subjective gender identity, not a claim about external categories.
  • "Pangender appropriates Indigenous and other cultural gender identities." Modern pangender identity emerged from Western LGBTQ+ communities; it does not claim Indigenous-specific gender roles such as Two-Spirit or Hijra.
