Etymology

Derived from "NB" (non-binary) + the gender-loving-gender naming pattern (parallel to sapphic and achillean). The spelling "enbian" reflects the pronunciation of "NB" as a word.

History

Coined in online non-binary communities in the 2010s, following the adoption of "achillean" and "sapphic" as umbrella terms. "Enbian" filled the gap for non-binary people attracted to non-binary people who found neither "sapphic" (women-loving) nor "achillean" (men-loving) accurately described their experience.

Common myths

  • "Enbian is the same as being non-binary." Enbian describes a pattern of attraction, not a gender identity. A non-binary person may be enbian, sapphic, achillean, or any other orientation.
