Etymology

Latin abro- (delicate, graceful) + sexual. Coined in online LGBTQ+ communities in the 2010s. Abroromantic is the romantic orientation equivalent.

History

Emerged from Tumblr and MOGAI-adjacent communities in the early-to-mid 2010s to name the experience of orientation that doesn't stay fixed. Distinct from general fluidity - abrosexual describes frequent, significant shifts rather than gradual drift.

Common myths

  • "Abrosexual people are just confused or indecisive." Frequent orientation shifts are a consistent, recognizable pattern - not confusion. Abrosexuality is as stable an identity as any other, even though the specific attraction it describes shifts.
  • "Abrosexual is the same as bisexual or pansexual." Abrosexuality describes the fluidity and frequency of orientation change, not the range of genders one is attracted to. An abrosexual person's orientation may cycle through different identities over time.
