Belgium & Europe:

This guide is written from Ghent, so European and Belgian sources are tracked separately rather than folded into the international list above.

  • Transgender Infopunt - the Flemish reception, information and expertise centre for trans topics, based on the UZ Gent campus. Free and anonymous, and recognised by Equal Opportunities Flanders. If you are in Belgium and want to talk to someone rather than read a page, start here.
  • Institute for the Equality of Women and Men (IGVM / IEFH) - the Belgian federal equality body. Publishes the official figures on legal gender-recognition in Belgium, and co-ran the 2024 survey on the living situation of trans and non-binary people in Belgium with Transgender Infopunt.
  • ILGA-Europe, Rainbow Map & Index - annual ranking of 49 European countries on LGBTI law and policy, published each May. The source for the Belgium figures on our Legal & Political Landscape page.
  • TGEU, Trans Rights Index & Map - annual, also May. Covers 54 countries across 32 areas of trans-specific legislation in Europe and Central Asia.
  • FRA, EU LGBTIQ Survey III - the largest survey of its kind in Europe: 100,577 respondents across 30 countries, fielded 2023 and published 2024. Includes a country data sheet for Belgium, which is the source for the European figures on our Mental Health page.
  • EU LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy 2026-2030 - the live EU policy framework, adopted October 2025.

International research & monitoring:

  • U.S. Trans Survey (2022) - the largest survey of trans people in the United States, with 92,329 respondents. Published by Advocates for Trans Equality. Note that this is US data and does not describe European experience.
  • GATE (Global Action for Trans Equality) - global research on trans health, depathologisation and human rights.
