Definition

Having no gender identity, or a gender identity of "none." Also called genderless, gender-free, non-gendered, or ungendered. Agender people may or may not identify as non-binary or transgender.

Flag

Agender pride flag: seven horizontal stripes, black, gray and white either side of a light green centre stripe.

Agender flag · Designer: Salem X · 2014

Seven-stripe symmetrical design, made by Salem X in 2014 and unchanged since. No earlier agender flag was in general use and nothing has replaced it. The symmetry is usually read as finding correctness in any orientation, the same idea Monica Helms gave for the transgender flag. Salem X did not publish stripe meanings, so the readings given above are the ones the community settled on afterwards.

Etymology

Greek/Latin prefix a- (without, not) + gender.

History

Emerged in online LGBTQIA+ communities in the early 2000s, growing out of genderqueer and asexual-spectrum spaces. Key distinction from non-binary: where non-binary is an umbrella encompassing alternative genders, agender specifically describes the absence of gender. The seven-stripe flag (2014) gives visual continuity with the transgender flag's symmetry.

Common myths

  • "Agender is the same as non-binary." Agender is a specific identity within the non-binary umbrella, describing the absence of gender specifically.
  • "Agender people are just avoiding labels." Agender is a clear, consistent identity.

Notable people

  • Angel Haze (1991–) - Rapper; has described being agender
