Definition
Having no gender identity, or a gender identity of "none." Also called genderless, gender-free, non-gendered, or ungendered. Agender people may or may not identify as non-binary or transgender.
Flag
Seven-stripe symmetrical design. The symmetry represents "finding correctness in any orientation."
Etymology
Greek/Latin prefix a- (without, not) + gender.
History
Emerged in online LGBTQ+ communities in the early 2000s, growing out of genderqueer and asexual-spectrum spaces. Key distinction from non-binary: where non-binary is an umbrella encompassing alternative genders, agender specifically describes the absence of gender. The seven-stripe flag (2014) gives visual continuity with the transgender flag's symmetry.
