Etymology

Likely from French neutre (neutral) + the suffix -ois.

History

Coined in 1995 by H. A. Burnham, a neutrois person, in posts to transgender Usenet newsgroups. That makes neutrois one of the oldest community-coined non-binary terms still in wide use, predating most of the online gender vocabulary that followed it.

Common myths

"Neutrois and agender are the same thing." While closely related, neutrois often describes a specific, positive quality of neutrality - a null or zero-point gender - rather than simply the absence of gender.
"Neutrois people don't have a gender." Neutrois people have a gender identity: it is neutral. Nullity or neutrality is a real, experienced gender position.
