Achillean / MLM (Men Loving Men) flag

Three horizontal stripes, light blue above a pale almost-white centre and light blue again, with a single green carnation centred on the pale stripe. Blue stands for men and masculinity; the carnation is the flower Oscar Wilde and his circle wore, a Victorian signal of love between men. Built as the counterpart to the sapphic flag, which uses the same shape with pink stripes and a violet. Credited to the Tumblr blog pridenpositivity in 2016, with the version in general use redrawn by the Pride-Flags account on DeviantArt on 5 October 2016. Several references say only that it was made by a Tumblr user in 2016 or 2017 and name nobody, so the attribution is reasonably well supported but not certain. No official colour specification has ever been published. The values here are the widely circulated community set; they are community convention, not an authoritative standard. Reference sites differ by a digit or two on the blue and the cream, giving #9AC6E9 and #FAFDEA for the values shown here. This flag is not the gay men's flag. That is a separate 2019 design in greens and indigos, and it has its own entry.

Agender flag

Seven-stripe symmetrical design, made by Salem X in 2014 and unchanged since. No earlier agender flag was in general use and nothing has replaced it. The symmetry is usually read as finding correctness in any orientation, the same idea Monica Helms gave for the transgender flag. Salem X did not publish stripe meanings, so the readings given above are the ones the community settled on afterwards.

Anarchy flag

A plain black field with a red circle-A. The black flag came first: it appeared in French labour protest in 1831 and Louise Michel called on anarchists to adopt it at a Paris Commune commemoration on 18 March 1882, saying she would raise it in mourning for the dead and for lost illusions. She carried one at an unemployed demonstration on 9 March 1883 and defended the act at her trial. The circle-A is much later. It was proposed in the April 1964 bulletin of the Paris Groupe Jeunes Libertaires, by Tomás Ibáñez, drawn by René Darras, specifically so the movement would have one sign that was fast to spray and paste. It went nowhere in France at first. Milan's Gioventù Libertaria used it from 1966 and systematically from 1968, and it spread internationally around 1972-73. The romantic claims that it dates to the Spanish Civil War or the 1868 International are not supported by the archives. No colour specification exists for this flag. Black is definitionally #000000; the red is simply the ink colour of the painted A and carries no separate doctrinal meaning here. Do not confuse it with the red-and-black diagonally split flag, which is the anarcho-syndicalist flag commissioned by the CNT for May Day 1931: there red stands for the syndicalist labour struggle and black for anarchism.

Demigender Flag

Seven-stripe symmetrical design: dark gray, light gray, light yellow, white, light yellow, light gray, dark gray. The grays mark the partial or absent part of the gender, the yellow marks the non-binary part, and the white centre marks non-binary or agender identity. This is the umbrella flag for demigender as a whole. Demigirl and demiboy use the same layout and swap the yellow for pink or light blue. No colour codes have ever been published for any flag in this family. The designs were posted without hex values and without stated meanings, and the readings above are ones the community settled on afterwards. We have not found a sourced set of yellow values in circulation, so the colour table here is empty rather than guessed. If you know of one, we would like to see it: see our sources page. Attribution is unsettled. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki at lgbtqia.fandom.com credits this design to Salem, Tumblr user @transrants, whose demigirl and demiboy flags were posted on 18 February 2014 and reuploaded to the Pride-Flags archive on 4 July 2015. The separate wiki at lgbtqia.wiki instead credits Tumblr user alexander--the-great, with an earliest sighting of 21 June 2013. We name neither as settled. The credit to a Tumblr user called microliths, which circulates widely, has no source behind it that we can find.

Disability Pride flag

A charcoal field crossed by five diagonal stripes. The muted colours and straight stripes were chosen so the flag is safe for people with visually-triggered conditions such as migraine and seizures. Magill never published official colour codes; the values given here are the ones that circulate in the community, and they differ slightly between sources.

Six lines of text in rainbow colours on black: SCIENCE IS REAL, BLACK LIVES MATTER, NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL, LOVE IS LOVE, WOMEN'S RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS, KINDNESS IS EVERYTHING. Flag of Facts is a retail name. The thing itself is the American "In this house, we believe" yard sign. Kristin Garvey, a youth services librarian in Madison, Wisconsin, made the original by hand on foam board with Sharpies on 9 November 2016, the day after the US presidential election, listing groups she believed the incoming administration would harm and pairing each with a slogan already in use by Black Lives Matter, immigration activists, LGBTQ+ movements, and Hillary Clinton's 1995 Beijing speech. She wrote none of the lines from scratch; she assembled them. Jennifer Rosen Heinz saw it and organised a printable version, redrawn by Kristin Joiner of 622 Press, reportedly in about twenty minutes. Rosen Heinz has said on the record that the words were not originally hers. Garvey's original Sharpie sign is now held by the National Woman's Party museum in Washington DC. Wording and order vary. The canonical 2017 sign runs Black Lives Matter, Women's Rights Are Human Rights, No Human Is Illegal, Science Is Real, Love Is Love, Kindness Is Everything, under the header "In this house, we believe:". This flag uses a common merchandise ordering and drops the header. Neither is wrong; this is a variant, not the original. Other versions add lines such as "Water is life" or "Trans rights are human rights". No colour specification exists. The rainbow sequence carries no assigned per-line meaning.

Gay men's flag

Most people who say "the gay flag" mean the rainbow flag. This record is the other one: the gay men's flag, the green-to-indigo design the shop sells as Flag - Gay. Created by Triton, who posts as gayflagblog on Tumblr, and published in 2019. Triton worked from an earlier proposal by Mod Hermy of the pride-color-schemes blog, changed the palette and wrote a meaning for each stripe. He has said plainly that the flag is not meant to replace or erase the rainbow flag and that he would like the two used together. No official colour specification has ever been published for this flag, in the way the Gilbert Baker Foundation published one for the rainbow. The values here are the community set that circulates wherever the flag is used, including on the colour-code reference sites. Treat them as community convention, not an authoritative standard. Two smaller notes. Triton's own writing calls the sixth and seventh stripes purple and dark purple; on screen they read as indigo, so they are named that way here. And the flag is often called the MLM flag or the vincian flag. It is not the achillean flag, which is a separate design.

Graysexual Flag

Five symmetrical stripes, top to bottom: purple, gray, white, gray, purple. The colours are taken from the asexual flag and carry the same meanings there: purple for community, gray for the area between asexual and allosexual, and white for sexuality. The gray sits between the purple and the white because it marks the transition between the two. Proposed in 2013 by someone using the name Milith Rusignuolo, who uploaded the design on 21 June 2013. Flags of the World records it as five horizontal stripes in purple, gray, white, gray and purple, and notes that the gray and the purple usually look lighter here than on the asexual flag. No colour values were published with the design and the sets in circulation disagree with each other, so the codes given here are community convention rather than anything official.

HRC Equality flag

The logo of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ political advocacy organisation in the United States. A yellow equals sign on a blue field, meaning exactly what it looks like: equality. HRC was founded in 1980 as the Human Rights Campaign Fund. In 1995, under executive director Elizabeth Birch, it rebranded to signal a wider mission and commissioned the San Francisco firm Stone Yamashita, which produced ten candidate marks. Focus groups preferred a different option; Birch's committee insisted on this one for its bluntness. No individual designer is named in any source. On 25 March 2013, the day before Supreme Court oral arguments in the Proposition 8 and DOMA cases, HRC posted a red version of the logo and asked supporters to use it as a profile picture. It was shared over 100,000 times and drove a 600% traffic increase to hrc.org. HRC said red was chosen because it is the colour of love. The colour values here come from HRC's own Logo Standards guide dated March 2012. No more recent published brand guide was found, so the current official values may differ, and this blue is noticeably darker than the blue most retail flags use.

Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag

Adds a yellow triangle with a purple circle, taken from Morgan Carpenter's intersex flag, to the Progress Pride chevron, so that intersex people are named on the flag rather than assumed into it. Like the Progress flag it builds on, this is an addition rather than a replacement. Neither the Progress flag nor the six-stripe rainbow has been retired, and all three are in parallel use.

Four equal horizontal stripes: yellow, white, purple, black. Made by Kye Rowan in February 2014, for non-binary people who did not feel represented by the genderqueer flag. Rowan was explicit that it was not meant to replace Marilyn Roxie's 2011 genderqueer flag but to be flown alongside it. Neither flag has been retired, both are in current use, and this guide keeps a separate entry for each.

Baker's original design. Hot pink was dropped in late 1978 because the fabric was not commercially available; turquoise was dropped in 1979 to allow even splitting for display on lamp posts, leaving the modern six-stripe flag. The colour values follow the Gilbert Baker Foundation's published Pantone specification, which Baker set out himself before his death.

Palestinian flag

Designer: Disputed. The 1916 Arab Revolt design is credited variously to an Arab nationalist club in Istanbul, to al-Fatat, and to Sir Mark Sykes. The national flag of Palestine: black, white and green horizontal bands with a red triangle at the hoist, in the pan-Arab colours. The design descends from the banner of the 1916 Arab Revolt. Its authorship is genuinely disputed between an Arab nationalist literary club in Istanbul (1909), the Young Arab Society al-Fatat (founded Paris 1911), and Sir Mark Sykes of the British Foreign Office; reference works decline to settle it. Palestinians used a reordered version from the early 1920s. The PLO Executive Committee formalised the current arrangement on 1 December 1964, and it was declared the flag of the State of Palestine at Algiers on 15 November 1988. Israel banned public display of the flag for decades; the prohibition was lifted after the 1993 Oslo negotiations. The dynastic readings of the four colours come from a thirteenth or fourteenth century verse, "white are our deeds, black are our battles, green are our fields, red are our swords", and are a later symbolic gloss rather than strict documentation. No official colour specification exists. Palestinian Authority Flag Law No. 5 of 2006 contains none, and the 1964 PLO resolution fixed geometry only: a 2:1 ratio, three equal bands, and a red isosceles triangle at the mast. The Pantone values given here are from the London 2012 Olympics protocol sheet, which is the nearest thing to an authorised specification we could find. The hex codes circulating online come from colour-aggregator sites, not from any Palestinian document.

Pansexual flag

Three equal horizontal stripes: magenta, yellow and cyan. First posted to an anonymous Tumblr account in 2010. The person behind the account, Jasper V., confirmed in a blog post in February 2013 that the design was theirs, which is why older sources describe the flag as having no known designer. The flag has never been replaced. Alternative pansexual designs have been proposed since, none of which has displaced it, and the three-stripe flag is the one in general use.

Philadelphia Pride Flag

The 'More Color More Pride' flag added black and brown stripes atop the six-stripe rainbow to address the erasure of Black and Brown LGBTQIA+ people. It directly influenced the 2018 Progress Pride Flag.

Polyamorous flag

Three horizontal stripes, blue, magenta and dark purple, with a white chevron at the hoist holding a gold heart. Designed by Red Howell and chosen on 23 November 2022 by a community vote of 30,827 people, run by the PolyamProud committee. The colour values are the committee's own published specification. The 1995 pi flag is covered below and is still in use.

Polysexual flag

Created because "they're all under the multisexual umbrella." Mirrors bisexual and pansexual flag layouts to signal shared plurisexual space.

Progress Pride Flag

Designer: Daniel Quasar · 2018

A reworking of the six-stripe flag that adds a left-pointing chevron of black, brown, light blue, pink and white to foreground LGBTQIA+ people of colour and the trans community. The chevron points left to indicate progress still to be made. It adds to the six-stripe rainbow rather than retiring it. Nothing about the 1978 or 1979 flags was found wanting in the way a retired flag is; Quasar's design asks the viewer to think again about the original rather than to stop using it. Both flags are in parallel use and this guide keeps a separate entry for each. Reception has been mixed and the argument is worth knowing about. Supporters point to the explicit recognition of racism and transphobia inside LGBTQIA+ communities. Critics have called the additions performative, have argued that the six-stripe flag already stood for everyone, and some LGBTQIA+ people of colour have said they were not part of designing a flag made in their name.

Puppy Pride flag

Queer People of Color flag

The six-stripe rainbow flag with a raised brown or black fist in the centre, signalling solidarity between queer liberation and racial-justice movements. The fist colour varies.

Rainbow / LGBTQIA+ Pride Flag

Designer: Gilbert Baker / Paramount Flag Co. · 1978/1979

The current six-stripe rainbow flag, the most widely recognised LGBTQIA+ symbol worldwide. Adapted from Gilbert Baker's original 1978 eight-stripe design after hot pink and turquoise were dropped. Those two stripes went for practical reasons rather than because anything was wrong with them: the hot pink fabric was not commercially available in the quantities needed, and turquoise was dropped in 1979 so the remaining stripes divided evenly when the flag was split and hung either side of a parade route. Indigo was replaced by royal blue at the same time. This is the flag almost everyone means by "the gay flag". It has stood for the whole of LGBTQIA+ life rather than for gay men specifically since the 1980s, which is why a separate gay men's flag was made in 2019. Baker's 1978 eight-stripe original is kept as its own entry because it carries a different published colour specification.

Rainbow Peace flag

Two well-documented symbols combined in a design that is not documented at all. The peace symbol was completed in February 1958 by Gerald Holtom, an RCA-trained designer and conscientious objector, for the Direct Action Committee's Easter march from London to Aldermaston. It superimposes the semaphore signals for N and D, for nuclear disarmament: N is two flags held down at 45 degrees, D is one flag up and one down. Holtom also described it as a self-portrait, an individual in despair with palms outstretched downward, in the manner of Goya's peasant before the firing squad. CND deliberately never copyrighted it: a symbol of freedom, it is free for all. The rainbow peace flag is Italian. Aldo Capitini made it for the first Perugia to Assisi peace march on 24 September 1961, inspired by the Aldermaston marchers, having friends sew coloured stripes together at speed. The original had five stripes; the familiar version has seven, purple at the top down to red, with PACE across the centre. This spiral or sunburst variant has no attributable designer and no publication date. It is a generic commercial design sold by many unrelated vendors, none of whom credit an originator. No colour specification exists for it. The black between the rays has no documented meaning.

Sapphic / WLW flag

Created by Tumblr user lesbeux-moved on 14 August 2015 with a realistic pair of violets, and simplified to a single stylised violet by the Tumblr blog pride-color-schemes on 25 June 2017 because the detailed violets were hard to reproduce. No official colour specification has ever been published for this flag. The values shown here are the widely circulated community set sampled from the 2017 artwork; they are community convention, not an authoritative standard.
