Novosexual

An orientation in which a person's sexual orientation changes together with their gender identity.

Definition

An orientation in which a person's sexual orientation changes together with their gender identity. As their gender shifts, the genders they are attracted to shift in step. Effectively a combination of abrosexual (fluid orientation) and genderfluid (fluid gender). The romantic equivalent is novoromantic.

Etymology

Latin novo- (to alter, to change) + sexual. Coined, along with novoromantic, by Tumblr user jacobsshinobu on or before June 15, 2014.

History

Part of the 2014 wave of Tumblr identity-coinage. The "novo-" prefix was created as an umbrella for orientations that change in lockstep with gender. For example, a novosexual person might be attracted to women when they feel like a man, and to multiple genders when they feel non-binary. Dedicated novosexual flags were created by MoonJellyBuniny on August 15, 2020, with colors drawn from the abrosexual and genderfluid flags.

Common myths

  • "Novosexual is just abrosexual." Abrosexual describes a fluid orientation on its own; novosexual specifically ties that fluidity to gender change, so the two fluctuate together.
  • "This is too complicated to be a real orientation." For genderfluid people whose attractions track their gender, novosexual names a real and otherwise hard-to-describe pattern in a single word.
