STP stands for stand to pee. It is a small, compact aid that lets you pee standing up, whether you are at a urinal, a festival, on a hike or just out for the day. It is easy to carry and easy to clean.
How it works
The STP has a cup that collects the pee and a spout that channels it forward. The seal between the cup and your body is what stops leaks, so getting the position right matters more than anything else.
Using it
- Open your fly or lower your underwear just enough.
- Hold the cup snugly against your body so it covers where the pee comes out, with the spout pointing forward and slightly down.
- Start slowly, then relax and let it flow.
- When you are done, keep the cup in place for a moment, then lift it away towards the front so the last drops run out through the spout.
Practise before you rely on it
Two honest points: an STP takes practice, and no STP is spill-proof on the first try. Practise a few times in the shower at home before you use it in a public bathroom. Trousers with an easy fly and underwear you can move aside quickly make it a lot simpler. Leaks in the first weeks are normal and not a sign that it is not for you.
Taking it with you
Carry it in a small pouch or zip bag, so it stays clean and nobody sees it unless you want them to.
Cleaning
- Rinse it right after use, through the channel, with water.
- At the end of the day, wash it properly under the tap with lukewarm water and a small drop of mild soap.
- Let it air dry, or pat it dry with a towel.
Pee left behind in the channel is the main reason people give up on an STP. A quick rinse straight after use saves you a lot of trouble.
Look after yourself
Do not hold your pee because you are nervous about using your STP in public. Holding urine is a real route to urinary tract infections. If you have pain or burning when you pee, see a doctor.
